About Surtur
Surtur is one of Marvel's most ancient and terrifying cosmic threats — a fire giant of apocalyptic proportions whose very existence is synonymous with the prophesied destruction of Asgard known as Ragnarok. His Marvel Comics debut came in Journey into Mystery #97 (1963), making that issue a prized Bronze Age target for any serious Thor collector. That single issue introduced readers to a villain whose ambitions dwarfed nearly every other antagonist in the Thor mythos, and copies in high grade remain highly sought after on the collector market.
Over the decades, Surtur has been the centerpiece of some of Thor's most celebrated storylines. Writer Walt Simonson's legendary run on Thor in the 1980s brought Surtur to the forefront in spectacular fashion, culminating in the "Surtur Saga" that unfolded across Thor #340–353. This arc is widely considered one of the greatest Thor stories ever told and a cornerstone of Marvel's Bronze-to-Modern Age transition. The issues from this run — particularly Thor #349–353 — are consistently in demand among collectors for their breathtaking scope, iconic artwork, and the sheer weight of Surtur's threat to all of existence. Armed with the Twilight Sword and commanding legions of fire demons, Surtur proved he could match gods, consume realms, and reshape the cosmos.
Beyond his role as Thor's nemesis, Surtur has crossed paths with the Avengers, the Defenders, and even cosmic-level players across the Marvel Universe. He is a member of the Hell-Lords and the Lords of the Splinter Realms, placing him among Marvel's most powerful supernatural forces. His power set is staggering — combining fire manipulation, size alteration, sorcery, necromancy, soul absorption, and dimensional manipulation — which makes him one of the few villains capable of threatening not just Asgard but the entire Nine Realms simultaneously. His cinematic appearance in Thor: Ragnarok (2017) introduced him to a new global audience, which has driven renewed collector interest in his key back issues.
For collectors, Surtur represents a deep well of high-value opportunities. Journey into Mystery #97 is the flagship key, but the Simonson Thor issues are the real treasure trove — affordable in mid-grade but increasingly competitive in 9.6 and 9.8 slabs. Any serious Thor or Asgard collection is incomplete without representation from Surtur's most defining appearances, and with Marvel continuing to explore the cosmic and mythological corners of its universe, his key issues show no sign of cooling off.
