About Ghost Rider (Blaze)

Johnny Blaze is Marvel's original Spirit of Vengeance, a motorcycle stuntman who made a desperate deal with Mephisto to save the life of his mentor, Crash Simpson. That bargain bound his soul to Zarathos, a powerful demonic entity, transforming him into the Ghost Rider — a flaming, skull-headed avatar of divine punishment who rides the night in search of the wicked. His debut in Marvel Spotlight #5 (1972) is one of the most iconic first appearances in the Bronze Age of comics, and a cornerstone key issue that serious collectors actively hunt. The raw energy of that debut, with cover art that burned itself into the imagination of an entire generation, made Ghost Rider an instant legend.

Over the decades, Johnny Blaze has been at the center of some of Marvel's most ambitious supernatural storytelling. The original Ghost Rider series of the 1970s established the character's mythology, but it was the relaunched Ghost Rider series beginning in 1990 that exploded the character's popularity during the speculator boom, introducing a new Rider in Danny Ketch while Blaze returned as a supporting player hunting his replacement. Blaze eventually reclaimed the mantle in the mid-2000s through Jason Aaron's critically acclaimed run, which redefined his origin, deepened the cosmic stakes of the Spirit of Vengeance, and sent Johnny on a savage cross-country rampage that stands as essential reading. Aaron's run, particularly the "Heaven's on Fire" arc, is a high point in Marvel horror storytelling.

As a team player, Blaze has ridden alongside some of Marvel's most eclectic rosters — from the original Champions alongside Hercules and Black Widow, to the Midnight Sons alongside Blade, Morbius, and Doctor Strange, a supernatural strike force that dominated the early 1990s crossover scene. His appearances in New Fantastic Four and Savage Avengers further demonstrate how Ghost Rider elevates every team book he touches, bringing an unpredictable, hellfire-fueled wildcard energy that no other character can replicate.

For collectors, Ghost Rider books represent one of the most rewarding areas of the Marvel back-issue market. Marvel Spotlight #5 is a legitimate Bronze Age key that commands serious prices in high grade, and the 1973 ongoing series has numerous desirable early issues. The 1990 series launch is an affordable entry point with significant upside, and Jason Aaron's run offers modern key issues that have appreciated steadily. Whether you're chasing Bronze Age slabs, 90s variants, or modern horror arcs, a Ghost Rider collection rewards both the passionate reader and the savvy investor.
