About Mr. Fantastic

Reed Richards — Mr. Fantastic — is one of the most consequential figures in Marvel Comics history, a genius scientist whose exposure to cosmic radiation during an unauthorized space flight transformed him into a living elastic wonder capable of stretching and reshaping his body to virtually any form. Debuting in Fantastic Four #1 (November 1961), Reed stands at the very foundation of the Marvel Universe as we know it. That first issue, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, didn't just introduce a superhero team — it rewrote the rules of what superhero comics could be, making it one of the single most important keys in the entire hobby. A raw copy in any grade is a legitimate grail book, and high-grade certified examples routinely command staggering prices at auction.

Beyond his rubber-limbed power set, Reed's true superpower is his intellect — widely regarded as the smartest mind on Earth within the Marvel Universe. He has built dimension-crossing bridges, neutralized cosmic threats that leveled civilizations, and even gone toe-to-toe with Galactus using nothing but preparation and ingenuity. His role as the moral and strategic center of the Fantastic Four drives some of the medium's most celebrated stories, including the original Galactus Trilogy in Fantastic Four #48–50, the Kree-Skrull War crossover, and Jonathan Hickman's landmark FF and Fantastic Four runs from 2009 onward — which introduced the Future Foundation and reframed Reed as a universe-scale thinker wrestling with impossible choices. Hickman's era is especially prized by modern collectors.

Reed's web of connections across the Marvel Universe is staggering. As a founding member of the clandestine Illuminati alongside Iron Man, Professor X, Black Bolt, Namor, and Doctor Strange, he has shaped events far beyond the Baxter Building — including decisions around the Infinity Gems and the catastrophic Incursion events that defined Hickman's New Avengers and Avengers runs leading into Secret Wars (2015). His darker alternate-universe counterpart, the Maker from the Ultimate Universe, added a genuinely sinister dimension to the character and has become a compelling villain in his own right, appearing across multiple series and generating collector interest in his own key issues.

For collectors, Reed Richards books represent some of the deepest and most rewarding corners of the hobby. Fantastic Four #1 is the crown jewel — a Silver Age cornerstone on par with Amazing Fantasy #15 and Incredible Hulk #1. But the deep run of classic Kirby and Lee issues, the milestone Bronze Age stories, and the wave of acclaimed modern runs all offer incredible entry points at a variety of price levels. Whether you're hunting slabbed Silver Age keys, first appearances of Galactus, or the first issue of Hickman's groundbreaking FF, building a Reed Richards collection means engaging with the very spine of Marvel's publishing history.
