About Professor Pyg
Professor Pyg — real name Lazlo Valentin — is one of the most genuinely unsettling villains DC has introduced in the modern era of Batman comics. A former operative of the shadowy organization Spyral who descended into madness, Valentin reinvented himself as the grotesque ringmaster of the Circus of Strange, obsessing over his twisted vision of "perfection." His weapon of choice is transformation itself — he surgically grafts doll-like masks to his victims, turning them into blank-faced, zombie-like servants he calls Dollotrons. The combination of surgical horror, theatrical madness, and genuine physical menace made him an instant standout in Gotham's already crowded rogues gallery.
Professor Pyg made his debut in Batman #666 in 2007, a landmark issue written by Grant Morrison with art by Andy Kubert. That issue — set in a possible dark future featuring Damian Wayne as Batman — is itself a major collectible, but Pyg's full, terrifying introduction came during Morrison's celebrated Batman and Robin run beginning in 2009. Issues #1–3 of that series pit the newly partnered Dick Grayson Batman and Damian Wayne Robin against Pyg in a story that shocked readers with its raw, carnival-nightmare energy. First printings of Batman and Robin #1 are among the most sought-after single issues of the late 2000s Batman era.
Beyond Morrison's defining work, Professor Pyg has proven to be a remarkably durable addition to Batman's world. He has clashed with Batman Incorporated, appeared in crossover events, and even crossed paths with broader DC villain organizations including the Secret Society of Super Villains. His roots in Spyral also tie him into the espionage-flavored corners of the DC universe, giving writers room to explore his backstory in unexpected directions. His theatrical menace and genuinely frightening design have earned him adaptations in animation and live-action television, which consistently drives new readers back to his print origins.
For collectors, Professor Pyg represents exactly the kind of character worth hunting down early. Batman #666 is a key issue that carries weight both as a first appearance and as a cornerstone of Morrison's legendary Batman saga. Batman and Robin #1 through #3 are essential reads and smart pickups in high grade. As DC continues to mine Morrison's Batman era for inspiration, demand for Pyg's key books shows no signs of cooling — making now a smart time to lock down his foundational appearances before the market catches up.
