About MacKenzie Coyle

MacKenzie Coyle, better known as Mac, is one of the four core protagonists introduced in Paper Girls #1 (October 2015), the critically acclaimed series from Image Comics written by Brian K. Vaughan with art by Cliff Chiang. Mac is the tough, no-nonsense leader of the paper route crew, a cigarette-smoking twelve-year-old from the suburbs of Cleveland whose streetwise attitude makes her the de facto authority among her friends. Her first appearance in Paper Girls #1 is the key issue that launched one of the most celebrated creator-owned titles of the 2010s, and first prints of that debut issue remain among the most sought-after Image Comics from that era.

What makes Mac such a compelling character is the mythic weight the story eventually places on her shoulders. Though she starts out as a relatable kid navigating the early morning hours of November 1, 1988, the series pulls her and her crew across time periods ranging from prehistoric Earth to the far future. Across the six-volume run, Mac's arc is perhaps the most emotionally devastating of the group, as the time-travel narrative forces her to confront truths about her own future and mortality that no child should have to face. Her origin classification as God/Eternal within the lore of the series speaks to the cosmic scale the story assigns to these seemingly ordinary girls.

The Paper Girls story unfolded across thirty issues, later collected into six trade paperback volumes, before concluding in 2019. The series won multiple Eisner Awards and generated enormous mainstream attention when it was adapted into a streaming series. That cultural crossover moment sparked a significant surge in back-issue demand, particularly for early print runs of Paper Girls #1 through #5, which introduced Mac and established the group dynamic at the heart of the story.

For collectors, Paper Girls #1 first print is the definitive key — it marks not only Mac's debut but also the first appearances of Erin, Tiffany, and KJ, making it a four-for-one key issue. Variant covers exist and command premiums, while later story issues featuring pivotal Mac moments have also found a dedicated audience. With the series now complete and its cultural legacy firmly established, building a run of Paper Girls represents one of the smartest long-term holds in modern Image back-issue collecting.
