About Kaine
Kaine Parker is one of Marvel's most compelling anti-heroes, born from the darkest chapter of the Spider-Man mythos — the Clone Saga. A flawed and unstable clone of Peter Parker created by the Jackal, Kaine was the first attempt at replicating Spider-Man's genetic template, and that imperfection defined him. Plagued by cellular degeneration and a tortured psyche, he spent years operating in the shadows as a deadly vigilante, leaving a distinctive mark — literally — on those he hunted. His first appearance in Web of Spider-Man #119 (1994) is a key Bronze-to-Modern Age transition book that serious Clone Saga collectors actively chase, as it introduces a character whose story arc would ripple through Spider-Man titles for decades.
What separates Kaine from other Spider-Man supporting characters is his extraordinary and often terrifying power set. Beyond the standard wall-crawling and spider-strength, Kaine possesses a precognitive "spider-sense" that manifests as haunting visions of death, a corrosive touch capable of leaving a burned handprint on flesh, and stealth capabilities that make him a ghost in the dark. These abilities made him a fascinating foil to Peter Parker — a mirror image twisted by suffering and moral ambiguity. His appearances throughout the original Clone Saga are essential reading, and back issues from that era featuring his confrontations with Spider-Man, Ben Reilly, and the Jackal remain in strong collector demand.
Kaine's greatest transformation came during the 2011 "Spider-Island" arc, when a cure for his cellular degeneration gave him a second chance — and a new identity. Taking up the mantle of the Scarlet Spider in the 2012 ongoing series set in Houston, Texas, Kaine became a reluctant hero in a book celebrated for its gritty tone and willingness to push its protagonist into morally complex territory. The Scarlet Spider ongoing series (2012–2014) is a fan-favorite run with a devoted cult following, and key issues from that series — particularly the first issue and early story arcs — have seen consistent interest on the back-issue market. His later evolution into Tarantula and his ties to the Spider-Force and Web Warriors teams further cemented his place as a cornerstone of the Spider-Man corner of Marvel.
For collectors, Kaine represents one of the richest hunting grounds in modern Marvel back issues. Web of Spider-Man #119 is the anchor key, but savvy collectors also target his early Clone Saga appearances, the full Scarlet Spider (2012) run, and crossover appearances in Superior Spider-Man and Spider-Verse tie-ins. As Marvel continues to revisit clone and Spider-legacy storylines, Kaine's profile only stands to rise — making now an ideal time to build out a complete collection before the market catches up.
