About Hulkling
Hulkling, born Dorrek VIII and raised on Earth as Teddy Altman, stands as one of the most compelling characters Marvel has introduced in the 21st century. A hybrid of two of the galaxy's most powerful warring races — the Kree and the Skrull — Teddy carries royal blood from both sides of an ancient conflict. His mother was Princess Anelle of the Skrull Empire, and his father was the legendary Kree warrior Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel. Raised in secret on Earth by a Skrull caretaker posing as his human mother, Teddy grew up unaware of his true heritage, discovering his shape-shifting abilities and extraordinary strength as a teenager before stepping into a destiny far larger than he ever imagined.
Hulkling made his first appearance in Young Avengers Vol. 1 #1 (2005), a landmark debut that collectors continue to chase. Writer Allan Heinberg and artist Jim Cheung introduced a fresh roster of teenage heroes that immediately captured the hearts of Marvel readers, and Hulkling was central to that magic. His relationship with fellow Young Avenger Wiccan (Billy Kaplan) became one of Marvel's most celebrated romances, groundbreaking in its sincere and respectful portrayal. The Young Avengers run is considered essential reading and a cornerstone of modern Marvel history, making early issues highly sought after in the back-issue market. The 2013 Young Avengers series by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie further elevated both characters to fan-favorite status with its stylish, innovative storytelling.
Teddy's story took on cosmic proportions during the Empyre event (2020), in which he was crowned Emperor of the united Kree/Skrull Alliance and given the title of Dorrek VIII — fulfilling an ancient prophecy of a warrior king who would unite the two rival empires. This arc cemented Hulkling as a major player not just in street-level Marvel adventures but across the entire cosmic landscape, connecting him to teams ranging from the Young Avengers and New Avengers to the Guardians of the Galaxy and beyond. His evolution from teenager to galactic emperor is a character journey rarely matched in modern superhero comics.
For collectors, Hulkling's key issues represent some of the best investment opportunities in recent Marvel history. Young Avengers Vol. 1 #1 is the cornerstone first appearance, and high-grade copies continue to perform well. The Children's Crusade limited series, the 2013 Young Avengers run, and the Empyre tie-ins are all essential additions to any serious modern Marvel collection. As representation in comics has become increasingly important to readers and collectors alike, Hulkling's books carry both cultural significance and genuine hobby value — making them worth pursuing now before demand rises further.
