About Armstrong
Aram Anni-Padda, better known as Armstrong, is one of Valiant Comics' most beloved and enduring characters — a hard-drinking, poetry-quoting, nearly indestructible immortal who has walked the earth for roughly ten thousand years. Born in ancient Sumer alongside his brothers Gilad (the Eternal Warrior) and Ivar (the Timewalker), Aram was transformed into an ageless powerhouse through an ancient infection tied to a mysterious artifact called the Boon. Where his brothers took their immortality seriously, Armstrong embraced the centuries as one long, glorious party — befriending artists, philosophers, and revolutionaries while accumulating a bottomless satchel stuffed with the treasures of human history.
Armstrong made his first appearance in Archer & Armstrong #0 in 1992, a landmark issue that introduced both him and his unlikely partner Obadiah Archer, a sheltered teenage martial arts prodigy raised by a corrupt religious cult. That zero issue is a prized find for Valiant collectors, and the ongoing series that followed became one of the most entertaining and critically praised books of the original Valiant era. The pairing of the world-weary, supersized immortal with the wide-eyed, idealistic Archer gave the title a perfect comedic and action-driven dynamic that set it apart from the darker superhero fare of the early 1990s. The series tackled secret societies, ancient conspiracies, and outrageous villains with a sharp wit that still holds up decades later.
When Valiant was relaunched under Valiant Entertainment in 2012, Armstrong returned in a brand new Archer & Armstrong series written by Fred Van Lente, which quickly became a fan favorite and one of the defining titles of the modern Valiant line. This run expanded Armstrong's mythology considerably, deepening the lore around the Sect — the shadowy religious conspiracy that hunts him — and exploring his complicated brotherly relationships with Gilad and Ivar. Armstrong also appeared in crossover events including The Delinquents, a hilarious team-up with Quantum and Woody that is highly sought after by collectors who enjoy Valiant's lighter, character-driven storytelling.
For collectors, Armstrong's books represent some of the best value in both the original Valiant back issue market and the modern Valiant era. The original Archer & Armstrong #0 is a key first appearance that remains affordable compared to its historical significance, making it an excellent target for collectors building a complete Valiant run. The 2012 series by Van Lente is consistently praised as one of the greatest Valiant relaunches, and early issues are climbing in demand. Whether you are hunting bronze age Valiant treasures or stacking up the modern run, Armstrong's shelf presence is hard to beat — and his books deliver genuine storytelling quality alongside their collectible appeal.
